Two personality frameworks dominate popular culture: the Big Five and Myers-Briggs. Only one of them holds up as real, replicated science — and the gap between them is worth understanding in detail.
The Big Five — A Real Scientific Standard, Built Over Decades
The Big Five wasn't invented in a single paper — it emerged through real, decades-long convergent research. Ernest Tupes and Raymond Christal's real 1957-61 Air Force officer studies first identified five factors. Warren Norman's real 1963 replication relabeled two of them — "Extraversion" and "Conscientiousness" — terms still used today. Paul Costa and Robert McCrae's real NEO model, developed from 1978 through their 1992 NEO PI-R revision, became the field's standard full instrument.

The Big Five's own factor structure has been independently replicated across real, different cultures and time periods. It carries genuine real predictive validity: conscientiousness reliably predicts job performance and academic success; neuroticism reliably forecasts real risk of self-harm and suicidal behavior.
Myers-Briggs — Hugely Popular, Real Scientific Problems
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers during World War II. A real, notable detail: neither had any formal psychology training — both were self-taught in psychometric testing. Their real theoretical basis was Carl Jung's 1921 book Psychological Types.
Multiple credible sources today characterize the MBTI as pseudoscience — yet it remains one of the most widely used personality tools in the world, in corporate training and career guidance alike.
Why the Gap Between Popularity and Scientific Validity?
