🏨 Checking into the Hotel — ホテルにチェックイン

Six short conversations for checking into a hotel in Japan — from "I have a reservation" to leaving your bags after check-out. Polite, everyday Japanese, exactly the kind you'll use at a real front desk (フロント).

① I Have a Reservation — よやく

A: すみません、チェックインをおねがいします。 Sumimasen, chekkuin o onegaishimasu. Excuse me, I'd like to check in.

B: はい、おなまえは？ Hai, onamae wa? Certainly. Your name, please?

A: スミスです。よやくしています。 Sumisu desu. Yoyaku shite imasu. I'm Smith. I have a reservation.

② Passport, Please — パスポート

B: パスポートをおねがいします。 Pasupooto o onegaishimasu. Your passport, please.

A: はい、どうぞ。 Hai, douzo. Sure, here you are.

B: ありがとうございます。 Arigatou gozaimasu. Thank you very much.

③ The Room — へや

A: へやはなんかいですか？ Heya wa nankai desu ka? What floor is the room on?

B: ごかいです。これがかぎです。 Gokai desu. Kore ga kagi desu. It's on the fifth floor. Here is your key.

A: わかりました。ありがとうございます。 Wakarimashita. Arigatou gozaimasu. Got it. Thank you.

④ Breakfast Time — あさごはん

A: あさごはんはなんじからですか？ Asagohan wa nanji kara desu ka? What time does breakfast start?

B: しちじからです。にかいのレストランです。 Shichi-ji kara desu. Nikai no resutoran desu. From seven o'clock. It's in the second-floor restaurant.

A: いいですね。ありがとうございます。 Ii desu ne. Arigatou gozaimasu. Nice. Thank you.

⑤ Wi-Fi — ワイファイ

A: すみません、Wi-Fiはありますか？ Sumimasen, Wi-Fi wa arimasu ka? Excuse me, is there Wi-Fi?

B: はい、パスワードはこちらです。 Hai, pasuwaado wa kochira desu. Yes, here is the password.

A: たすかります。ありがとうございます！ Tasukarimasu. Arigatou gozaimasu! That's a big help. Thank you!

⑥ Check-out & Luggage — チェックアウト

A: チェックアウトはなんじですか？ Chekkuauto wa nanji desu ka? What time is check-out?

B: じゅういちじです。にもつをあずけますか？ Juuichi-ji desu. Nimotsu o azukemasu ka? Eleven o'clock. Would you like to leave your luggage?

A: はい、おねがいします。 Hai, onegaishimasu. Yes, please.

Real Japanese Tip: 「おねがいします」(onegaishimasu) is your magic word at any front desk — attach it to almost any noun to make a polite request: チェックインをおねがいします (check-in, please), タクシーをおねがいします (a taxi, please). Also note floors use the counter ～かい（階）: いっかい (1st floor), にかい (2nd), ごかい (5th) — and "what floor?" is なんかい（何階）. One thing that surprises visitors: in Japan the ground floor is the 1st floor (いっかい), just like the US — so ごかい really is five flights up!
