Bacon's Case for Starting With the Senses
Francis Bacon (1561-1626) laid out his own real case in Novum Organum (1620), part of a larger planned work, the Instauratio Magna. Bacon's own real argument was that genuine knowledge should be built inductively — starting from the senses and particular observations, then working carefully upward toward general principles, rather than starting from Aristotle's own inherited general principles and deducing outward. Real, systematic experimentation, in Bacon's own view, was essential to discovering nature's own actual truths.

Descartes's Case for Starting With Doubt
René Descartes (1596-1650) took the real opposite starting point in his own 1637 Discourse on the Method. Rather than trusting the senses as a reliable foundation, Descartes employed a genuine, deliberate methodological doubt — rejecting any belief that could possibly be doubted, to see what, if anything, survived. What survived was the real, famous conclusion: the very act of doubting proves the doubter exists — "Je pense, donc je suis," "I think, therefore I am." From that one indubitable starting point, Descartes built outward using deduction alone, treating sensory perception itself as fundamentally unreliable.
