Ptolemy's own Almagest — itself real, informed by the exact Babylonian data Chapter 2 covered — was translated into Latin by Gerard of Cremona around 1175 (Chapter 5), becoming the working astronomical foundation for the medieval European universities Chapter 5 also covered. Nearly 400 years later, Copernicus (Chapter 6) directly challenged that same real text with heliocentrism — a genuine confrontation between one specific, traceable document and the tradition it had itself shaped across four centuries.

Why This Pattern Is Worth Naming, Not Just Noticing Five separate, unrelated figures, across five real centuries, each acquired a more dramatic final scene than the documented record actually supports. That's not a coincidence about these five people specifically — it's a genuine, recurring feature of how history gets retold: a real, solid achievement quietly attracts a better story once enough time has passed for no one left alive to correct it.

What This Course Doesn't Cover

This course closes deliberately around 1700, at the real founding maturity of the Royal Society and Newton's Principia.
