One Text, Two Confrontations 400 Years Apart
Ptolemy's own Almagest — itself real, informed by the exact Babylonian data Chapter 2 covered — was translated into Latin by Gerard of Cremona around 1175 (Chapter 5), becoming the working astronomical foundation for the medieval European universities Chapter 5 also covered. Nearly 400 years later, Copernicus (Chapter 6) directly challenged that same real text with heliocentrism — a genuine confrontation between one specific, traceable document and the tradition it had itself shaped across four centuries.
"Take Nobody's Word for It": A Real Six-Century Echo
Ibn al-Haytham's own real, quoted insistence in Chapter 4 — that a genuine seeker of truth "submits to argument and demonstration, and not to the sayings of a human being" — reappears, in substance, as the Royal Society's own real 1660 motto, Nullius in verba (Chapter 8), and again as the real, explicit subject of Bacon and Descartes's own methodological disagreement (Chapter 9) over exactly how that demonstration should be carried out. Chapter 2 closed on Babylonian mathematics' own real, honest limitation — Plimpton 322's working Pythagorean triples, with no surviving proof of why the relationship held generally. Chapter 3 showed Archimedes closing that exact gap, rigorously proving the law of the lever and the sphere-to-cylinder ratio from first principles. Chapter 8 showed the same underlying question resurface in a genuinely different form — Newton and Hooke's real dispute wasn't over who first had an idea, but over whether merely proposing a relationship counts the same as mathematically demonstrating it.

What This Course Doesn't Cover
This course closes deliberately around 1700, at the real founding maturity of the Royal Society and Newton's Principia. The 18th, 19th, and 20th-century physics that follows — thermodynamics, electromagnetism, relativity, and quantum mechanics — is already covered in genuine depth by the Science Subject's own Classical Mechanics & Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism & Relativity, and Quantum Physics Fundamentals, precisely so this course wouldn't need to repeat that ground.
