Challenge 2: The Three Chapters This Course Extends — Solution Walkthrough

The three chapters:

  1. Web Servers Fundamentals Chapter 2 (Architecture Models) — covered
     Nginx's event-driven architecture only at a conceptual level:
     worker processes, a non-blocking event loop. It never tuned any
     of it for a real workload.
  2. Web Servers Fundamentals Chapter 6 (Reverse Proxying & Load
     Balancing Fundamentals) — introduced proxy_pass and round-robin
     load balancing as the basic mechanism, but explicitly deferred
     the real depth (multiple algorithms, upstream pools, proxy
     headers) to this course.
  3. Web Servers Fundamentals Chapter 9 (Performance Basics) — covered
     gzip, keep-alive, and a first mention of proxy_cache only at a
     surface level, as one piece of a three-server comparison rather
     than a serious tuning treatment.

What was left shallow in each:

Chapter 2 left out real tuning of worker_processes and
worker_connections for actual traffic; Chapter 6 left out upstream
pools and any load-balancing algorithm beyond plain round robin;
Chapter 9 left out proxy_cache's own zones, cache keys, and
invalidation strategy entirely, along with any real performance
troubleshooting.
