I, Robot (2004): A Film That Borrowed a Title

An Adaptation in Name More Than Substance

Alex Proyas directed the 2004 film I, Robot, starring Will Smith. Its screenplay genuinely originated as Jeff Vintar's unrelated 1995 spec script, "Hardwired" — an Agatha Christie-style locked-room murder mystery with an FBI agent interrogating AI suspects. Once the studio acquired the "I, Robot" title and branding, Vintar reworked his own script, renaming a lead character "Susan Calvin" and incorporating the Three Laws directly; Akiva Goldsman later rewrote it further for Smith, with both writers credited.

An honest verdict, not just a fan complaint — the film genuinely used few of Asimov's own characters and ideas, and even the ones present were heavily adapted; its plot is not meaningfully derived from Asimov's own work, in places even running against his core ideas — while still keeping the Three Laws directly central to the plot. A real, documented case of a title and a core concept surviving adaptation far better than the actual story did.

Foundation on Apple TV+

Premiered 24 September 2021

Apple TV+'s live-action Foundation takes genuine, substantial creative liberties with the source material — inventing "Brother Day," "Brother Dusk," and "Brother Dawn," clone-emperor characters with no direct book equivalent, and expanding Demerzel into a major, ongoing humanoid-robot character. Showrunner David Goyer has described a restructured, greatly expanded timeline — citing roughly eighty episodes unfolding across a thousand-year span, compared to the original trilogy's own far more condensed treatment.

🔮 A Familiar Name From Chapter 8 Demerzel — R. Daneel Olivaw's own alias from Prelude to Foundation, already covered in Chapter 8 — gets expanded here into one of the show's own central ongoing characters, carrying the merged-universe storyline directly into a genuinely modern adaptation.

A Positronic Echo in Star Trek

Asimov originated the term "positronic brain" back in his 1939–40 robot stories. Star Trek: The Next Generation's android character, Data, is explicitly given a "positronic brain" of his own — a clear literary echo.

A lineage, not a confirmed acknowledgment — the connection is widely assumed by fans and critics alike, and the literary lineage itself is undeniable. What isn't confirmed, at least in readily available sources, is whether Star Trek's own production team ever formally credited this as a deliberate, acknowledged homage to Asimov specifically, rather than simply borrowing a striking piece of terminology.

The Three Laws in the Real World

Influential, never binding — no real engineering standards body has ever formally adopted the Three Laws. Real, documented echoes do exist: South Korea's proposed 2007 "Robot Ethics Charter" reportedly drew on them, and UK AI/robotics ethics guidance from 2010–2011 proposed five updated laws explicitly building on Asimov's original three. Real, serious skepticism is just as well documented — Robert J. Sawyer's 2007 editorial in Science argued that military funding of real robotics makes such safeguards genuinely unlikely in practice, and other researchers have concluded that reliably constraining real robot behavior through simple rules like these isn't achievable the way the fiction portrays. The honest verdict: the Laws remain a real, influential discussion and policy touchstone — never a binding engineering standard.

What Ten Chapters Add Up To

This course opened with a genuinely uncertain birth date and closed with a term — "robotics" — that became the real name of an entire field. In between: a set of deliberately imperfect rules, stress-tested across dozens of stories; a mathematics of prediction broken by a single unpredictable individual; two separate universes quietly merged into one; and a non-fiction career vast enough to rival the fiction that made him famous in the first place. Asimov's real legacy was never a specific engineering achievement — no robot anywhere runs on his actual code. It's something closer to vocabulary and moral imagination: the words a whole field still reaches for, and the questions it still argues about, seven decades after a twenty-one-year-old wrote them into a pulp magazine.
