I, Robot (2004): A Film That Borrowed a Title
Alex Proyas directed the 2004 film I, Robot, starring Will Smith. Its screenplay genuinely originated as Jeff Vintar's unrelated 1995 spec script, "Hardwired" — an Agatha Christie-style locked-room murder mystery with an FBI agent interrogating AI suspects. Once the studio acquired the "I, Robot" title and branding, Vintar reworked his own script, renaming a lead character "Susan Calvin" and incorporating the Three Laws directly; Akiva Goldsman later rewrote it further for Smith, with both writers credited.
Foundation on Apple TV+
Apple TV+'s live-action Foundation takes genuine, substantial creative liberties with the source material — inventing "Brother Day," "Brother Dusk," and "Brother Dawn," clone-emperor characters with no direct book equivalent, and expanding Demerzel into a major, ongoing humanoid-robot character. Showrunner David Goyer has described a restructured, greatly expanded timeline — citing roughly eighty episodes unfolding across a thousand-year span, compared to the original trilogy's own far more condensed treatment.
A Positronic Echo in Star Trek
Asimov originated the term "positronic brain" back in his 1939–40 robot stories. Star Trek: The Next Generation's android character, Data, is explicitly given a "positronic brain" of his own — a clear literary echo.

What Ten Chapters Add Up To
This course opened with a genuinely uncertain birth date and closed with a term — "robotics" — that became the real name of an entire field. In between: a set of deliberately imperfect rules, stress-tested across dozens of stories; a mathematics of prediction broken by a single unpredictable individual; two separate universes quietly merged into one; and a non-fiction career vast enough to rival the fiction that made him famous in the first place. Asimov's real legacy was never a specific engineering achievement — no robot anywhere runs on his actual code. It's something closer to vocabulary and moral imagination: the words a whole field still reaches for, and the questions it still argues about, seven decades after a twenty-one-year-old wrote them into a pulp magazine.
