This is the fourth and final course in the Science Fiction Subject — and, chronologically, it opens the earliest. Where the dedicated Asimov course, the Television survey, and the Film survey each began well into the 20th century, this course reaches back to the genre's own genuinely contested beginnings.

A Deliberate Echo, Not a Starting Point Here

Already covered, on purpose, elsewhere This site's own Classic Literature III course opened its first chapter with the real 1816 Villa Diodati gathering — Byron, the Shelleys, and Polidori, snowed in near Lake Geneva — which directly produced both Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Polidori's The Vampyre. Frankenstein is widely regarded as science fiction's own arguable ancestor, and that ground has already been covered in real depth there rather than repeated here. This course deliberately picks up several decades later, with two writers working independently of each other and of that earlier Romantic tradition.

Jules Verne: Real Science, Real Research

France, the Voyages Extraordinaires

Jules Verne's own major works include Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864), From the Earth to the Moon (1865), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872). His publisher, Pierre-Jules Hetzel, released these novels under the banner of the Voyages extraordinaires, deliberately positioning them as combining real "scientific education" with entertaining fiction for a broad audience.

Verne himself insisted his own fiction was grounded in genuine research rather than prophecy or pure invention. In his own words: "I have invented nothing." He credited his own accuracy to diligent note-taking from published scientific sources, not to any real gift of foresight.

H.G. Wells: Scientific Romance and a Single Impossible Assumption

England, the "Scientific Romances"

H.G. Wells's own canonical early novels — The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898) — were genuinely called "scientific romances" at the time, a real, contemporary term that predates "science fiction" itself. These novels are credited with inventing several themes that later became genuinely classic across the entire genre.

Wells's own real, documented approach differed sharply from Verne's — not technical plausibility, but a disciplined kind of realism built around fantasy. He described his own method directly: "the more impossible the story I had to tell, the more ordinary must be the setting." This later became known as "Wells's Law" — incorporating only a single extraordinary assumption per story, then following that one assumption with rigorous, prosaic detail.

Two Real, Different Approaches

An honest note on a popular claim — a persistent story holds that Verne personally criticized Wells's work as not being real science. No documented dispute of that kind was found in the course of researching this chapter — what's genuinely verifiable is a real, sharp philosophical difference in approach: Verne's emphasis on technical plausibility and research versus Wells's emphasis on a single bold assumption grounded in ordinary, realistic detail. That contrast is treated here as the real, verified fact worth knowing, rather than repeating an unconfirmed personal feud.

Who Really Gets to Be "The Father of Science Fiction"?

Both Verne and Wells are genuinely, frequently cited as founders of the genre — and the title "father of science fiction" has real, documented attribution to both of them, and to a third figure this course reaches in Chapter 2: Hugo Gernsback, whose own 1926 magazine Amazing Stories gave the genre its modern name and its first dedicated commercial home.
