Terminator 2: An Earlier, Real CGI Landmark

1991, Two Years Before Jurassic Park

Terminator 2: Judgment Day's own T-1000 — brought to life by Industrial Light & Magic — is real, documented as the first use of a computer-generated main character in a blockbuster film. The scale of the real effort involved was genuinely enormous: rendering just 15 seconds of footage took up to ten days, and a team of up to 35 ILM artists worked on only five minutes of the T-1000's total screen time. The film was the most expensive ever made at the time, with production costs between $94–102 million, including a real $5 million spent on the T-1000 alone.

"I've Just Become Extinct"

A real, documented pivot point — Phil Tippett was hired in 1991 to animate Jurassic Park's dinosaurs using go-motion, the same technique he had pioneered for Dragonslayer. ILM animator Steve "Spaz" Williams then created test footage of a computer-generated T. rex that genuinely convinced Spielberg to pursue CGI dinosaurs instead. On hearing the news, Tippett reportedly exclaimed, "I've just become extinct" — a line Spielberg later worked directly into the finished film. Tippett wasn't actually made obsolete: Spielberg retained him to supervise animation on roughly 50 dinosaur shots across both Tippett Studio and ILM, work that earned him a real Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1993 — the film winning three Academy Awards in total for technical achievement.
