Zinoviev and Kamenev preserved exactly the position that gave Stalin
real, growing control over party appointments - the same control he
later used to sideline them once Trotsky was no longer the shared
threat holding the Triumvirate together.

WHY THIS BACKFIRED SPECIFICALLY FOR THEM
Once Trotsky's own influence was reduced, Stalin no longer needed
Zinoviev and Kamenev as allies - and by then, Stalin's own real
institutional power (built up through years as General Secretary) had
grown large enough that he could turn on them without needing anyone
else's protection. Zinoviev and Kamenev had spent their own political
capital defending the very rival who would remove them next, rather
than removing him while his position was more vulnerable.

ANSWER: Suppressing the Testament made short-term sense because
Zinoviev and Kamenev still needed Stalin's cooperation against Trotsky
