Every real attempt before Lobachevsky and Bolyai - Proclus, Ibn
al-Haytham, Omar Khayyám, Saccheri, Lambert, Playfair - shared the
same underlying goal: find the missing chain of logical steps that
derives the fifth postulate from the first four. Each attempt assumed
the postulate genuinely WAS a consequence of the other axioms, and
simply hadn't yet found the right argument to prove it. Even when
these attempts produced interesting side results (like Khayyám's), the
goal itself never changed across nearly two thousand years.

Lobachevsky and Bolyai's real resolution answered a completely
different QUESTION. Instead of finally supplying the missing proof,
they showed that no such proof could ever exist - because you can
build an entire consistent geometry (in which every theorem still
holds together without contradiction) using the first four postulates
while explicitly assuming the fifth is FALSE. If a fully consistent
alternative geometry can be built this way, the fifth postulate simply
cannot be a logical consequence of the first four, since a genuine
logical consequence could never be successfully denied without
producing a contradiction somewhere.

This is a different kind of resolution because it doesn't answer "yes,
here is the proof" or "no, here is a specific flaw in the postulate" -
it answers "the question itself assumed something false: that the
postulate had to be either provable or unprovable-because-untrue, when
it's actually independent of the other four altogether."

ANSWER: Every earlier attempt tried to supply the missing proof that
the fifth postulate follows from the first four. Lobachevsky and
Bolyai instead proved no such proof could exist, by constructing
consistent geometries where the postulate is false - showing the
postulate is logically INDEPENDENT of the other four, a fundamentally
different kind of answer than either successfully proving or
disproving it would have been.

WHY THIS WORKS AS AN ANSWER

differs in kind, not just in outcome, from every prior attempt.
