✨ Ichidan Verbs — いちだんどうし(一段動詞)
Group 2 verbs — the good news is these are beautifully regular. One simple rule covers almost every form. Master this group and conjugation suddenly feels easy.
What is an Ichidan verb? Ichidan (一段, "one-step") verbs are also called る-verbs or Group 2 verbs. They always end in る, and the syllable before that る is always an い-sound or え-sound (e.g. たべる, おきる). To conjugate them, you simply drop the る and add the ending — just one step, hence the name. Compare this to godan verbs where the stem changes — ichidan verbs never change their stem at all.
The Golden Rule
Drop る → add your ending
たべる → たべ + ます = たべます | たべ + ない = たべない | たべ + て = たべて

Ichidan vs. Godan — how to tell them apart: The rule is: if a verb ends in る AND the syllable before る contains an い or え sound, it is almost certainly ichidan. So たべる (べ = え-row) and おきる (き = い-row) are ichidan. However, there are a handful of godan verbs that look like ichidan — notably はしる (to run), しる (to know), かえる (to return), and きる (to cut). These must simply be memorised. The verb かえる is a useful one to watch — 帰る (to return/go home) is godan, while 変える (to change something) is ichidan, even though they sound identical!
