A Real, Genuinely Contested Origin

The chronicler Theophanes the Confessor credits the weapon's real invention, around 672 CE, to a man named Kallinikos, described as "an artificer from Heliopolis" in Syria. A more careful real historical reading complicates that tidy story: historian James Partington argued it more likely emerged from chemists working in Constantinople itself, genuinely building on discoveries inherited from the Alexandrian chemical school — a real, gradual accumulation of knowledge rather than one man's single invention.

A Secret Kept by Genuine Design

Whatever its real origin, the Byzantine state protected the weapon's exact composition with extraordinary, deliberate care. Emperor Constantine Porphyrogennetos later claimed the formula had been "shown and revealed by an angel," warning that revealing it to outsiders would bring real divine punishment — a genuinely convenient religious framing for what was, underneath, a hard-nosed state secret.

A Real Secret That Survived Capture Itself Knowledge of the weapon was genuinely compartmentalized — operators and technicians were each entrusted with only one piece of the process. That discipline worked: in 814, the Bulgarians captured 36 real siphons intact, along with quantities of the substance itself, and still couldn't reverse-engineer it. Greek fire proved genuinely decisive against Arab fleets during the two great sieges of Constantinople, in 674-678 and again in 718 — this course's own Chapter 9 will return to why those particular sieges mattered so much to the empire's own survival. The weapon saw real, further decisive use against Rus' raids in 941 and 1043, and during the Bulgarian war of 970-971.

Real Limitations

Greek fire was not a universal answer. It genuinely depended on calm seas and favorable wind, had a real, restricted effective range, and enemies eventually developed real countermeasures — vinegar-soaked felt or hides — that could blunt its effect.
