Once astronomers accepted the universe is expanding (Chapter 7), a genuine new question opened up: does that expansion mean the universe had an actual beginning, or could it expand forever while somehow always looking the same? For roughly two decades, this was a real, live scientific argument — not a settled matter.

The Steady State Model: An Expanding Universe With No Beginning

In 1948, the physicists Hermann Bondi, Thomas Gold, and Fred Hoyle proposed the Steady State model as a genuine rival to what would become the Big Bang picture. Their model accepted that the universe is expanding, but held that it nevertheless never changes in overall appearance over time — a principle they called the perfect cosmological principle: the universe looks essentially the same at any location and at any point in time, past, present, or future. The model's own central, genuinely bold mechanism was continuous matter creation — as expansion diluted existing matter, new matter would spontaneously appear at just the right rate to keep the universe's own density constant, with no beginning and no end.

A Genuinely Serious Scientific Rival This wasn't a fringe idea. Physicist Steven Weinberg, writing in 1972, praised the Steady State model precisely because it made such definite, testable predictions that it could actually be disproved — a real mark of good scientific practice, not evidence of weakness.

An Honest Correction: Did Hoyle Really Coin "Big Bang" as an Insult?

Fred Hoyle really did coin the term "Big Bang," during a March 1949 BBC Third Programme radio broadcast. His own real words were: "this Big Bang idea seemed to me to be unsatisfactory" — a phrase describing the rival theory he himself opposed. The popular version of this story holds that Hoyle chose the term deliberately as a mocking, dismissive label. But this specific claim is genuinely disputed. Hoyle himself explicitly denied any pejorative intent, describing it instead as simply "a striking image meant to highlight the difference between the two models." Historian Helge Kragh, investigating the claim directly, concluded the evidence for a deliberately derisive intent is "unconvincing," finding several real indications pointing the other way.

A Real Correction Worth Making The framing "Fred Hoyle mockingly coined the Big Bang" is a genuinely widespread but poorly supported story. He coined the phrase, without real dispute — but the specific claim that he meant it as an insult doesn't hold up well against the actual historical evidence.

1965: The Discovery That Settled the Argument

Working at Bell Telephone Laboratories' Crawford Hill facility in New Jersey, physicists Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson had built a highly sensitive radio antenna originally intended to support Project Echo, an early NASA satellite communications program. In May 1964, they detected a persistent, unexplained background signal — a uniform microwave radiation with an antenna temperature of roughly 4.2 K, coming from every direction in the sky with no obvious source. After consulting with a nearby Princeton team led by Robert Dicke, who had themselves been actively searching for exactly this kind of signal, the radiation was identified as the Cosmic Microwave Background — real, direct radiation left over from the universe's own hot, dense early state. The finding was published in 1965 and became the single most decisive piece of real evidence in favor of the Big Bang model.

But the Cosmic Microwave Background's own uniform distribution and near-perfect thermal spectrum, genuinely impossible to explain as scattered starlight through interstellar dust (the Steady State model's own best remaining explanation), proved fatal. Penzias and Wilson received the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics for their real, largely accidental discovery.
