Einstein's general theory of relativity, published in its full form in 1915, described gravity as the curvature of spacetime itself rather than a simple attractive force. Researcher Mario Livio, investigating the claim directly, found no surviving documentation of Einstein himself ever writing or being recorded saying those exact words.

Not Fabricated, but Not Fully Confirmed Either The story isn't simply invented — two of Einstein's own contemporaries, physicists Ralph Alpher and John Wheeler, separately reported hearing Einstein use the phrase "biggest blunder" on at least one real occasion, lending it genuine credibility. But the difference between "reported secondhand by contemporaries" and "directly documented in Einstein's own writing" matters, and this course treats that distinction honestly rather than repeating the tidier, more famous version as settled fact.

The Real Resolution

Whatever Einstein's own exact words, the cosmological constant was genuinely abandoned once Edwin Hubble's 1929 observations demonstrated the universe is actually expanding — making a static universe model, and the artificial term propping it up, unnecessary. The constant then sat largely dismissed for nearly seventy years, until a real, striking twist: 1998 observations of accelerating cosmic expansion brought the cosmological constant back into serious use in modern cosmology, in a role Einstein himself never anticipated.
