This course traces how humanity's own answer to a single question — what is the universe, and did it begin? — has changed again and again across thousands of years, from creation myths through Aristotelian eternity to the Big Bang. It is a history of ideas, not a physics course, and this chapter explains exactly what that distinction means and why it matters for everything that follows.

Two Existing Courses, One Genuine Gap

This site already teaches real cosmological physics in real depth. Astronomy Fundamentals' own Chapter 8 covers the Big Bang, redshift evidence, the Hubble-Lemaître law, and the Cosmic Microwave Background as physical, testable science — what the universe's expansion actually is and how astronomers know. History of Science, still outlined at the time of this writing, will cover the Copernican Revolution and the broader institutional history of scientific practice from antiquity through the early 18th century. Neither course, though, asks the specific question this course is built around: how has humanity's own idea of the universe's nature and origin changed over time, and why did each successive model win out over the one before it?
