This course traces the real scientific content and institutional history of science — not just its physics, but its universities, learned societies, and the slow professionalization of the whole enterprise — from the ancient world through the close of the Scientific Revolution, around 1700. Before any of that, it's worth pausing on a genuinely surprising real fact: the very word "scientist" is younger than the steam locomotive.

A Word Younger Than You'd Expect

Every person this course covers — Newton included — lived and worked before the word "scientist" existed at all. It was coined in 1833 by the English philosopher and historian of science William Whewell, and first appeared in print the following year, 1834, in Whewell's own anonymous review of Mary Somerville's On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences, published in the Quarterly Review.

Whewell's real, stated reasoning was practical: by the early 19th century, science was already splitting into real specialisms — "chemist," "naturalist," and similar terms were already common — leaving no single word for someone who studied science broadly. His own real, quoted proposal:

"As we cannot use physician for a cultivator of physics, I have called him a Physicist. We need very much a name to describe a cultivator of science in general. I should incline to call him a Scientist."

Before Whewell's coinage, the people this course will spend ten chapters on — Eratosthenes, Ibn al-Haytham, Copernicus, Newton — were real, working natural philosophers, a term dating back at least to Aristotle. Isaac Newton's own 1687 masterwork isn't titled anything resembling "the principles of science" — its real title is Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, "The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy."

A Genuine Surprise "Scientist" wasn't even widely adopted once Whewell coined it. The real historical record shows it caught on in the United States earlier in the 19th century, but wasn't in common use in Britain itself until around the turn of the 20th century — meaning even many working scientists of the mid-to-late 1800s would still have called themselves natural philosophers or "men of science" instead.

What "Natural Philosophy" Actually Meant

Natural philosophy wasn't a vague or informal label — it was the real, systematic, research-based study of the natural world, deliberately set apart from the supernatural, covering what modern readers would separately call physics, astronomy, chemistry, and biology all at once. It was philosophy in the older, broader sense: a genuine, disciplined pursuit of knowledge about how the world works, not merely armchair speculation.

Aristotle (4th century BCE)

The term's real roots trace to Aristotle's own works on nature — physics, biology, and cosmology treated as one unified philosophical pursuit.

Newton (1687)

Titled his own defining work Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica — "natural philosophy," not "physics" or "science," was still the real operative term.

Kelvin & Tait (1867)

Their real Treatise on Natural Philosophy helped define much of modern physics — the old term was still current a full generation after Whewell's 1834 proposal.

The word's own real history is a genuine clue to this course's own larger theme: "science" as a distinct, professionalized activity — with its own institutions, journals, and career path — is a comparatively recent invention. What this course actually studies is the millennia-long process that led up to that split, not a modern activity that always existed under a different name.
